Date posted: 22.06.2010 Print Full version

About 40% of the adult population of Ukraine over 18 years of age plan to follow the events of FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa. 22% intend to follow the majority of matches from group tournaments to the final, 8% intend to watch play-off matches and the final, 9% are only following the final.

People in the West, in the North and in the Centre of Ukraine intend to follow the events of the World Cup more than in the East, in the South and in Donbas. Notably, the number of football fans is almost the same in cities and in villages.

They are mostly young and middle-aged people with high level of education. It is almost two thirds of men and almost every one in five women.

The majority of the respondents will cheer for teams of Brazil (30%), Italy (24%), Germany (23%) and England (20%). Fewer respondents will cheer for teams of Spain (15%), France (15%) and Argentina (14%).

It is pleasant to state that almost every team found its supporters in the World Cup. 7% will cheer for Portugal, 4% - for Netherlands, 3% each - for the USA and Greece, 2% each – for Uruguay, Australia and Paraguay. Teams from the East: Japan, Korea and China have the smallest number of supporters.

Thus, the West will cheer for Brazil, Italy and England; the Centre, the North and the East – for Brazil, Italy and Germany; the South – for Brazil and Germany; Donbas – for Brazil, Italy and Argentina.

Italy is the favorite of youth, the older people classically cheer for Brazil and Germany.

Men and women will cheer equally for teams of Italy and England. Teams of Spain, Brazil and Argentina are mostly supported by men.

In villages Brazil, England and Argentina will be cheered for, in cities it will be Spain.

Most respondents stake on the Brazilian team (20%). Almost half the number stake on Italy (12%), Germany (11%), and Britain (10%). Then there are teams of Spain (8%) and Argentina (7%).

It should be noted that among fans of the Brazilian national team the number of those who are certain in its victory on the World Cup is the biggest (51%). They are followed by fans of English (47%), Italian (45%), Spanish (45%), Argentinean (42%), Portuguese (41%) and German (40%) teams as to their level of confidence in the victory of their favorite teams.

Another interesting fact is that such teams as Spain, Argentina and Germany are staked on mostly by football experts - respondents who intend to follow the course of the entire championship, however, the victory of Brazil is staked on by everybody.
