EURO 2012: Ukrainian sympathy

Date posted: 11.06.2012 Print

According to the survey conducted by the Sociological group "Rating", EURO 2012 excites great interest among Ukrainian people; almost everyone will cheer for the national team, despite the fact that people estimate its chances of victory worse than those of Spain and Germany, which, according to the majority, are favorites of the Championship.

Thus, one half of the adult population of Ukraine over 18 years of age intend to watch the development of events in EURO 2012. Specifically, 31% intend to watch the majority of matches from group tournaments up to finals, 9% - playoff matches and finals, other 9% - only finals.

However, 46% are not at all interested in the Championship, 5% - are still undecided.

Due to objective reasons, EURO 2012 excites greater interest of Ukrainians than, for example, FIFA World Cup, which occurred in 2010. Compared to a similar research of the Sociological group "Rating", less than 40% of Ukrainian people showed interest in the World Cup 2010.

The greatest interest towards EURO 2012 is expressed in the West, in Donbas, in the North and in the East. The lowest - in the Centre and in the South (these areas do not host matches of the Championship).

75% of Ukrainian men and less than 30% of women will follow the course of the Championship; with 55% of men who intend to watch the majority of matches from group tournaments up to finals.

In 2010, matches of World Cup were watched by almost two-thirds of men and nearly one in five women. Thus, the interest of women has increased most of all.

The younger are the respondents, the higher is their level of education and income, the greater is their interest in EURO 2012. Among Internet users there are 1.5 times more football fans than among those who do not use the Internet.

In addition to Ukrainian team (62% will cheer for it), the majority of respondents will cheer for such teams: Russia (23%), Germany (15%), England (15%), Spain (15%) and Italy (12%). Also people will cheer for France (5%), Netherlands (5%), Poland (4%) and Portugal (4%).

It is pleasant to ascertain that each team participating in EURO 2012 has found its supporters among Ukrainian people.

Only 3% of respondents, who plan to watch matches of the Championship, have not decided whom to cheer for.

Over two years, a lot fewer Ukrainian football fans cheer for Italy and France, which was likely influenced by the unsuccessful performance of these teams during the previous World Cup. However, fans continue to actively cheer for Germany, England and Spain – these teams are supported by the most active football fans (those who plan to watch all matches of the Championship); these are mostly middle-aged men who have a good understanding of football.

We should remind that Ukrainian and Russian teams did not participate in the finals of the previous FIFA World Cup.

The national team is mostly supported in the West, in Donbas, in the North and in the Center of the country. The lowest support for it is in the South.

Almost 40% of football fans in the East, in the South and in Donbas, one half - in the Centre and only 3% - in the West will cheer for Russia. Germany and Spain are more supported in the South and in the East, France - in the East, England - in the Center.

According to respondents, teams of Spain (29%), Germany (26%), England (23%) and Italy (16%) have the greatest chances of winning Euro 2012.

However, Ukrainians also believe in the success of their national team! Almost a quarter of respondents believe that Ukrainian team has chances of victory.

A lot fewer Ukrainians believe in the victory of the Netherlands (7%), France (7%), Portugal (5%) and Russia (4%).

Not more than 1% believes in chances of victory of other teams. Another quarter of respondents were unable to assess chances of participating teams.

Experienced fans stake on Spain (32%), Germany (29%) and England (28%). Men who intend to watch all matches of EURO 2012 stake on their victory.

However, Ukrainian women stake on the national team of Ukraine, which they believe has the best chances at the Championship. The victory of the Russian team is also believed in by women more than by men.

Chances of Italy and Portugal are believed in by both men and women.
