Citizens’ feelings as to freedom of speech curtailing in Ukraine

18% of respondents feel that the new government in Ukraine has already started to curtail freedom of speech.

Two-thirds have not felt the curtailing of the freedom of speech, while 16% have not decided on this issue.

Most felt the oppression in the West (38%), North (24%) and Center (18%).

The oppression was mostly felt in the West (38%), in the North (24%), and in the Centre (18%).

Among supporters of political parties they are: Our Ukraine (51%), Freedom (45%), Front for Change (40%) and Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (36%).

At the same time, 83% of supporters of the Party of Regions, 77% of CPU supporters and 61% of supporters of S. Tihipko’s Strong Ukraine have not felt freedom of speech curtailing in Ukraine.

Middle-aged respondents (20 to 24%) are the most concerned about pressure on freedom of speech, people of retirement age (15%) and young people (17%) are the least concerned about it.

The freedom of speech curtailment is mostly felt by respondents with higher (18%) and secondary special (20%) education.

The target audience of the research: the population of Ukraine aged from 18 and older. Optional quantity: 2000 respondents. The methods of investigation: personal formalized interview according to the questionnaire (face to face). Measure of inaccuracy for the values close to 50% is less than 3%, for the values close to 30% – less than 2,65, for the values close to 10% – less than 1,8. The period of completion: 16-24 of April 2010.
